Q. What is Whey protein ?
A. Whey is a byproduct of cheese production. It is separated from fresh milk in the cheese making process. The liquid whey that is left from cheese processing contains around 15% protein, with the rest being lactose (milk sugar) and fat. To remove a maximum of lactose and fat, the Whey undergoes a series of filtering steps, called ultrafiltration. What remains is Whey protein concentrate, referred to as WPC-80: it is 80% protein. The majority of WPC-80 will remain as Whey Concentrate, but a small percentage of WPC-80 goes through microfiltration to make Whey Isolate.

Q. Whey Concentrate or Whey Isolate, what is the best ?
A. We tend to prefer concentrate because some whey protein isolate manufacturing steps take out beneficial whey protein fractions such as beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, and bovine serum albumin peptides, which provide an important part of the health benefits of whey. However, if you are lactose intolerant, whey isolate or soy isolate maybe better for you.

Q. Whey protein concentrate is 80% pure protein. What makes up the other 20%?
A. The other 20% consists of minerals (calcium, potassium etc.), carbohydrates and some fat (less than 0.5 g per serving).
